What likely happened to make this piece look so cool, is the original canvas was sliced to reveal the wooden frame underneath and the person left it like this for hanging as it's own version of "artwork" without the actual artwork anymore.

Can be used for framing a new found piece or hung as it for gallery interest.

The wood could also be removed as it is being held in place like a canvas as that is what it originally was.
